Tassie Trip, Day 1

We flew from Melbourne to Hobart early Friday morning. Flight time was about an hour and a bit. Short and sweet.

Took the shuttle from the airport to the city (Airporter, $13/one way, $23/return) which took about 20 minutes.

We had booked a serviced apartment in the city (Abbey Apartments, $100/night) and since there were no renters the previous night, we were able to get in straight away.
The apartment was part of a 2-unit renter, which was probably an old house divided into two spaces. The space wasn't bad, nothing flash, but it did come with a kitchen/lounge room, a separate bedroom and an ensuite. A bit old but decent enough.

Features include heating, electric blankets, stove, oven, microwave and TV. No DVD player though, instead an ancient VHS player in its place.
The carpet was atrocious but for 4 days, I could live with it.

We had another hour to kill before we could pick up the car (weekend deal at Thrifty, pick up after 11am Fri and return before 11am Monday for under $100, extra $50 for limited liability) so we decided to get some brunch first.

After a quick stop at the tourist information centre to load up on tourist information, brochures and flyers, we walked aimlessly until we found a strip and chose the least depressing cafe we could find. Brunch was eggs benedict and a ham, cheese & tomato toastie, which, surprisingly, wasn't too bad.

We were planning to go do the Brewery Tour in the afternoon but when we called they were fully booked so we booked it for the next day instead.

We went to pick up our hire car and we decided to drive around. Neither of us had been to Hobart before so it was basically the blind leading the blind, but we decided to have a go at finding interesting, touristy sights anyway. With a few tourist maps on hand, we were off sightseeing.

We decided to do part of the Huon Trail itinerary as it didn't seem to be too much of a drive.

We quickly discovered that it was a bit harder to drive in Hobart (heaps of one way streets in the CBD, not enough signage, signs that didn't really lead to much) than it was in Melbourne.

Sightseeing pictures in the next post as this one's a bit too long now. Here's a couple of city sights taken during Day 1.

No photo editing at this stage as I'm too lazy. All pictures in this post as taken.
