The Holiday

So I managed to convince D to watch The Holiday with me. It was sappy and gooey and GOOD. I loved it. Surprisingly, so did D.

Nothing extraordinary about it, just your typical light fluffy romantic comedy. But Jude Law was gorgeous and Kate Winslet was funny. It's a feel good movie and the perfect choice to see during the Christmas season.

And, best of all, the official website lets you make a trailer of your life! How cool is that?

Australian Open

I've just decided to go and watch the Australian Open. It's practically happening in our backyard and I thought it would be a shame not to go. Plus, it's one of the cool things about living in Melbourne and I should take advantage of it.

I've roped D into buying tickets tonight. We're going to get the Ground Passes ($29/person) for the first weekend it's on. How exciting...

Read more about the Open here.

So Christmas came and went...

... with scarcely a whimper.

I got what I wanted for Christmas, which is this book I blogged about earlier. Yey.

I'm planning to read through this huge list once I get through the 8 or so library books I have with me now.

Will definitely blog about this monumental task.

We've been watching Entourage on DVD since we got back. I am ADDICTED. And so is D, I think. We're down to our last few episodes and we've budgeted ourselves to watching one episode a day. Yes, we need to get out more. But, this show's definitely worth a watch.

By the way, I've managed to post some more of our wedding pictures. Photos of us and our guests during the lunch reception. Have lots more to go through but these are enough for now.

Pictures

I was able to post some pictures online yesterday. So for those who have been bugging me (you know who you are) about the freakin' holiday pictures, here they are:

Panglao Island, Bohol (i'll probably move these to another site as they're still on Multiply and you need an account to view the pics)

Have lots more to sort through. I'll get there. Eventually.

early Christmas gifts

Apple delivered the ipod earlier than expected so D got his present early. It was really just an add-on present which I bought on a whim to supplement the Deep Purple albums. So I was expecting them to deliver it next week, after Christmas.

Well, I ordered the refurbished ipod online from the Apple store on Wednesday night. They sent me confirmation almost immediately with a tracking link. Next day the link said it was already shipped and due for delivery on Friday. Well, I certainly did not expect them to ship so quick (especially since it was free delivery and holiday season) and I had put our home as the delivery address. So, when they delivered on Friday, no one was here to receive it. I had thought to rectify the situation by emailing Apple on Thursday to tell them that no one would be at home on Friday. They said they can delay delivery until next Tuesday, which was cool. Well, according to the tracking link, they still delivered on Friday which was unsuccessful. They called me Friday night to schedule the next delivery which the girl said would be Thursday next week at the earliest. I said ok. (I was way confused by this time so I agreed). Guess what? They delivered the ipod this morning. Oh well. D got his add-on present early.

Since I can't keep gifts to myself for too long, I had to tell D that the ipod wasn't his proper present. Needless to say, he managed to convince me (admittedly, it did not take much) to give him his other gifts. Which I did. I got him Deep Purple vinyl records: Come Taste the Band, In Rock and Live Made in Japan. He absolutely loved them. Teehee. I love giving gifts.

Anyway, I previously posted that I was going to give him the nike+ipod attachment. Well, I've found out that it only works with the nano and I had inadvertently bought him a mini (i knew there was a reason it was way cheap). I didn't even know there was a difference (i am sooo tech savvy, aren't i?) Tch. So, there goes that idea.
____

On another note, today's the first day of my 4-day weekend. I'm spending it alone (D had to go visit his dad 'cause it's his birthday. thankfully i got out of it.) sorting through my clothes and organizing them and doing the same thing with my ipod. And if I have time, I'll go sort and organize our pictures too. Hopefully, by the end of this day, I'll be sorted and Ms. Organized.

I better get a move on then.

Friday, December 22

So this is Christmas...

It's the last day for work before a long-awaited 4 day weekend. Yes, yes, I know. I've just been on a fantastic holiday and have been only working for less than 2 weeks. But still. I've been soo looking forward to this.

Everybody's been asking what I'll be doing this Christmas. You want to know too? Well then I'll tell you. Nothing. Yup, nothing. Sad but true. We'll probably have a Christmas lunch or dinner with D's people but other than that, zilch. So that's Christmas in Melbourne. Bloody exciting, isn't it? Bah humbug.

Anyway, I'm excited about giving D his gifts... Got him 3 albums of Deep Purple (never even heard of the band before) and also got him a 4G ipod on sale. I'm also planning to get him the Nike+ipod thingie to encourage him to start running again. Yey.

This is what I want for Christmas:

1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die

I've just borrowed it from the library but I've decided I want my own copy. First of all, it's a huge book and I can't lug it around with me to read during the holidays. I'll need time to go through the list. Also, I plan to go through the list, borrow the books from the library and tick them off as I read them. Some books I've already read and enjoyed (ALL of Jane Austen's books made it to the list!! How cool is that?) and some I've read and just went huh (could someone please explain why Grapes of Wrath is considered a great book? it's depressing and there's too many tumbleweeds...). But the majority of the books I've never read. Which is why I'm embarking on a reading adventure. Call it my new year's resolution.

I hope D gets it for me soon...

For New Year's, a friend of mine from college is coming to visit from Adelaide. She's recently migrated to oz and been staying with her cousin somewhere in the vicinity of Adelaide. Needless to say, she's bored out of her mind. She's planning to move to Sydney to look for a job. I told her to come visit me first.

We're planning to go to the City for New Year's Eve. There's a lot going on so it should be fun.

Don't know if I'll be motivated enough to post during the holiday break. Although, I am planning to upload some honeymoon pics. We'll see.

Merry Christmas everybody!

i have been lax

yes, it's been ages since my last post and even longer since my last decent one. i've been lazy, i admit. and i still am.

just wanted to let people i'm still alive. even in smoky melbourne. (read about it here.)

Smoking: An image from NASA's advanced spaceborne thermal emission and reflection radiometer (ASTER) shows fires burning about 57km southeast of Mansfield. Burned areas appear charcoal. Picture: NASA
_______

on top of the smoke, ever since i've been back, summer in melbourne has been a bit off kilter. we've been having cool days (ranging from 15c to 20c) to really cold nights (winter cold, seriously). nasty.

well, the holidays are upon us and hopefully that'll give me some time to organize our honeymoon pictures and upload them. wish me luck!

Book Reviews

I've been reading lots lately, thanks to our local library. I so love it.

Having grown up in a 3rd world country wherein public libraries do not exist (AT ALL), having one accessible to me is amazing. Everything's free!

Decided to review some noteworthy books:

Freakonomics by Steven D. Levitt ("rogue" economist) and Stephen J. Dubner (journalist)

My sister asked me to reserve this book for her while she came over to visit but it arrived after she left. I'm grateful to her for introducing me to this book as I was "dazzled."

Hard to explain what the book's all about but basically it's Steven Levitt's extraordinary take on everyday stuff.
Really cool. Highly recommend it. *****

Griffin & Sabine Trilogy by Nick Bantock

I've been meaning to read this trilogy but wasn't quite willing to spend over $50 for them. So glad I could get them through the library.

What's it about? Here's excerpts from the official griffin and sabine website:

Griffin & Sabine This is the book that started the Nick Bantock obsession. The story is told through the strange and intriguing correspondence of Griffin and Sabine. Since each letter must be pulled from its own envelope, the reader has the delightful, forbidden sensation of reading someone else's mail. Griffin & Sabine is like no other illustrated novel, appealing to the poet and artist in everyone.

Sabine's Notebook For the thousands who finished Griffin & Sabine and asked, "What happened next?," came this second volume. Told in the same format as its predessor, Sabine's Notebook is filled with her delicately macabre drawings and notations, the notebook adds a darker element of visual intrigue to their complex and mysterious world.

The Golden Mean In this final volume of the best-selling trilogy the mystery of the two artists deepens and their questions grow more urgent. New obstacles (including a sinister intruder) test the tenacity of their passion, and in each letter or postcard, painting and prose are even more richly intertwined.
I loved the series. Interesting and very original. ****1/2*
I tried reading other Nick Bantock books, The Museum of Purgatory and The Egyptian Jukebox, but they didn't hold my fancy.
_____

Have to blog about the other books in another post as this one's getting too long...

Holiday!

2 more sleeps and we'll be flying to Manila!! 3 weeks off! Woohoo!

It's our delayed honeymoon and we're spending as much time on the beach as possible.

Our destinations:

  • Bohol - Panglao Island (5 days!)
  • Cebu - Mactan Island (1 day, as we're only passing through)
  • Boracay (5 days!)
  • Batangas - Laiya (2 days)
  • Puerto Galera - White Beach (2 - 3 days)
  • Palawan (3 days)

I can't wait.

Yey for frowns!

I came across this from my Gullible Info section on my Google page.

While it takes 67 muscles to frown and only 17 to smile, the 17 smiling muscles must exert 6 times more force to maintain the configuration.

Funny, eh?

Gifts

D got me this for my birthday. It is SO COOL.

(he got me the speakers. he already got me my ipod a few months back.)

He also gave me flowers, a card and a poem he wrote for me. Ok, I take it back. He isn't clueless. He's still cute though...

He also took me out to dinner. I'll blog about it in my food trip blog.

Happy Birthday to Me!

It's my birthday today. Hmm, I don't feel my age. I hope I don't look like it too. =)

If I were back in Manila, I'd throw a party. But, as it is, I'm here in Melbourne with scarcely any friends and no family. Boo hoo.

D's here though. He's been stressing himself as he doesn't have a surprise for me (i LOVE surprises). He's so cute but completely clueless too. Oh well. Boys will be boys.

Anyway, just wanted to greet myself Happy Birthday!

Wednesday, November 8

I need to travel more!

I found this site (showing visited countries), which I found cool.

One, for showing me how little of the world I've seen (only 7%! although I could've said I've visited China, as Hong Kong is apparently part of it).

And two, for the comments! They're so interesting and very revealing. Some people are sooo ignorant.

Spring Fever

We went to the city last Saturday to go on this chocoholic tour. It was okay. Not fantastic but still yummy. Got kinda sick of chocolates after the tour though. Hehe.

What was interesting when we went to the city were all these people dressed up (really dressed up) for the Horse Races. Apparently, the Melbourne Cup is a really big thing here in Melbourne. All I know about it is we get Tuesday off (yey!) and that it's funny to see people dressed up to the nines, running to catch the tram (drink & drive rule). =) Click for more info on this bizarre Melburnian tradition.
Yup, they were dressed like that catching public transpo. Go figure.

I got some practice driving done over the weekend. D says I'm getting better but I still feel antsy. Oh well.

Yey, one day of work then a day off!

First Month!

Just realized that we've been married for a month. Hmmm...

Anyway, wasn't really going to write about that but just wanted to put that in.

It's Daylight Savings Time over here so we've had to put our clocks an hour forward. Which sucks coz it means I have to get up an hour earlier. But it's good though since we still have sunlight past 7 o'clock in the evening.

Don't really know how that'll be beneficial to me since I don't do anything after work anyway. Tch.

I practice drove last Saturday down Beach Road all the way to DFO (Direct Factory Outlet). Very stressful, I might say. I hate being stressed and antsy about driving when I've been driving for over ten years and it should come easy as pie already. Oh well, more practice driving to go... (although practicing before we leave for our holiday might not be the best idea as I will be driving on the right side of the road when we get back to Manila).

This post has gone away from me and has just turned into a jumble of randomness. Better leave it for now...

out of sorts

i've been feeling out of sorts lately.

antsy, cranky and all that.

first thought it was pms but i think it's beyond that.

don't know what is though.

today, i feel sort of depressed.

which is a new symptom.

want to find out what's causing this so that i can stop it.

want to feel better.

=(

Driving on the wrong side of the road

My car lease guy called me today to tell me that my application was approved. That means I get my new car when we fly back here from Manila. Yey! (decided to get it after our holiday since we didn't want the trouble of finding a place for it to stay unused for 3 weeks).

Now, all I need to learn is to drive on the wrong side of the road. And to remember that the clutch is on my left. And in turning, to use my indicators instead of turning on my wipers. Add in hook-turns (don't worry if you don't know about them since they're native only to Melbourne), roundabouts and road rules. So much to remember! And I don't exactly have the best memory. Teehee.

It' s a bit hard learning to drive here though. What with D getting stressed about how I drive and me getting stressed with how D teaches. On top of that, his truck (he calls it the Beast. with good reason.) is not the easiest car to drive... Oh well, such is life.

At least I get a brand spankin' new car. =)

Children of Men

D and I went and watched the movie "Children of Men" starring Clive Owen and directed by Alfonso Cuaron. It was totally not what I expected. But it was GOOD. I don't know why I was expecting a hollywood experience (even had this notion it would be a fun, mostly mindless, run like Minority Report) but we got much more than that. It was brutal and realistic (well, as realistic as you can get when a film is set in the future).

another suprise was that it was written by PD James, one of my crime fiction writers. the movie was so NOT crime fiction. well, i'm aching to read the book now. reserved it at our local library...

http://www.childrenofmen.net/ watch it, love it. well, i did, anyway.

Winter's Back! Arghhh!

it's horrible. i've waited far too long for the weekend to come and they bring me this. winter all over again... argh!

yes, yes, i'm being overly dramatic here but the weather's bringing me down. it's cold, windy, drizzly and did i mention cold out there.

well, i'm blaming the weather for my lack of productivity today. plus, the tgif syndrome. if i didn't have to finish this bloody presentation today i wouldn't even be pretending to work!

i want sunshine!

Nights out

Last night, D and I went to get a quick bite to eat for dinner. We were headed for this kebab place on Acland Street but we got sidetracked by this café where there was this chick performing live music. It turned out to be a good choice, actually. The food was good (and cheap! D had a huge burger for $6), the chai latte was reasonable and the singer turned out to be good as well.

D had a chat with the chick (i've completely forgot her name by now but D has her flyer) and she gave us her next gig dates/venues. There's one tonight in Collingwood. Maybe.

Kat Bahloo was a good find as well as it has open mike nights on wednesdays. D's been wanting to gig since forever and this might just push him to actually do it.

There's a work social function tonight. Bare Feet Lawn Bowls competition & BBQ. Hmm, never been lawn bowling before. D says we should go to help me with Australian transformation... That's a bloody good reason not to go. But I am curious.

Either that or D and I will go have a lovely dinner somewhere. Spanish or Mediterranean. Yum. Choices, choices.

Wedding Pictures

Well, I've finally managed to post some of our wedding pics online. They're not too bad, I might say. Considering that we only paid a minimal amount and we were kinda worried about our choice of photographers at the onset. But, she pulled through and it went pretty ok.

The rest of the pictures can be viewed through our kodakgallery album.

Update: Damn kodak. They took down my albums. Argh!

Friday, October 13

where are the lazy breakfasts?

i've always wanted a lifestyle that afforded me lazy breakfast mornings.

melbourne seemed conducive to that lifestyle as every time we drive down the road, we see loads of people having seemingly casual breakfasts at cafes all day.

i thought i'd be one of them one day. well, sad to say, at this stage in my life, i'm not. i'm still rushing in the mornings, having coffee to go and completely forgetting about breakfast. hmm, something needs to change...

even during weekends, d and i haven't had a lazy breakfast in ages. we believe it's because of the "settling-in" business, getting married and having my family over for the past 3 weeks. well, at least we're hoping it is. we're hoping once everything's settled down, we'll have our leisurely weekends. and lazy breakfasts.

here's to hope...

Monday, October 9

well, we've done it

30.09.06 Old Treasury Building, Melbourne

we got married! as of today, i've been a wife for 9 days.
people keep asking me if it feels different. i keep saying it doesn't. and it really doesn't. maybe it's because my family's been staying with us since the wedding (chrismiss left for manila yesterday and theagan will be here until saturday). then again, as d said during the reception, we already felt married even before the wedding.
so, no crazy married adventures as of yet. we've been busy touring my family around and haven't had enough alone time.
but i'll keep you posted...
